Sunbeam snakes are docile, medium-sized constrictors native to Southeast Asia, prized for their iridescent scales that shimmer with rainbow hues in light. These snakes typically reach 3–4 feet in length and thrive in warm, humid environments. Housing: Provide a 40-gallon breeder tank or larger with secure, locking lids. Maintain temperatures of 78–82°F with a warm hide and cool side. Use aspen, cypress mulch, or coconut husk substrate to retain humidity at 60–80%. Include hiding spots, branches, and water bowls for soaking. Feeding: Offer frozen-thawed mice or small rats every 7–10 days. Feed juveniles more frequently. Always supervise feeding to prevent injury. Handling: Sunbeam snakes are generally calm but can be defensive when stressed. Handle gently and infrequently, allowing them to acclimate to captivity over several weeks. Temperature & Humidity: Use under-tank heaters or heat tape with thermostats to maintain proper warmth. Monitor humidity with a hygrometer; mist enclosures as needed. Health: Watch for respiratory issues, mites, and scale rot. Provide annual veterinary checkups with a reptile specialist.
