Arizona Bark Scorpion Care Sheet The Arizona bark scorpion is a small, venomous species native to the southwestern United States. Adults typically reach 2–3 inches in length and are tan to brown in color. Despite their venomous nature, their sting is comparable to a bee sting for most people and poses minimal risk to healthy adults. Habitat & Housing Provide a 10-gallon terrarium or larger with a secure, escape-proof lid. Use a substrate of aspen shavings, cypress mulch, or coconut husk at least 2 inches deep to allow burrowing. Maintain temperatures between 75–85°F during the day and allow a slight drop at night. Humidity should remain low to moderate (30–50%). Provide hiding spots such as cork bark, PVC pipes, or commercial hides. Lighting & Temperature No special lighting is required, though a low-wattage heat lamp or under-tank heater can maintain proper temperatures. Use a thermostat to prevent overheating. Scorpions are nocturnal and prefer dim conditions. Feeding Feed appropriately-sized insects such as crickets, roaches, or mealworms. Juveniles may eat pinky crickets; adults can handle larger prey. Feed every 5–7 days. Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours to prevent stress or injury to your scorpion. Water & Humidity Provide a shallow water dish or mist the enclosure lightly 1–2 times weekly. Do not allow the substrate to become waterlogged. Arizona bark scorpions prefer drier conditions compared to other species. Handling & Safety Handle with care or avoid handling altogether. Use forceps or a clear container to safely move your scorpion if necessary. Always wash hands after contact. Keep the enclosure away from children and pets unfamiliar with the species. Lifespan Arizona bark scorpions typically live 4–6 years in captivity with proper care.
