The Ambon Sailfin Dragon (Hydrosaurus amboinensis) is one of the most visually spectacular lizards in the reptile hobby. Named for the dramatic sail-like crest running along their back and tail, these large, semi-aquatic agamids from the Indonesian island of Ambon are a true showpiece animal. They are intelligent, active, and rewarding for experienced keepers who can meet their demanding space and humidity requirements. We carry hand-selected juveniles at Ohio Pet Depot:

🏠 Enclosure & Habitat Setup

Enclosure Size

Life Stage Minimum Enclosure Size
Juvenile (under 18 in) 4’ x 2’ x 4’ (L x W x H)
Sub-Adult / Adult 6’ x 3’ x 6’ minimum β€” larger is always better; custom builds are common

Sailfin dragons are large, fast, and highly active. They need significant vertical height for climbing and a large water feature for swimming β€” this is non-negotiable for their physical and psychological health. A water section at least 12–18 inches deep and wide enough to fully submerge is ideal. Many keepers build custom enclosures or convert large rooms/closets for adult animals.

Water Feature

  • Sailfin dragons are semi-aquatic and must have access to a large, clean body of water at all times
  • A large Rubbermaid tub, stock tank, or built-in pond section works well
  • Filter the water with a submersible pump or canister filter β€” they defecate in water frequently
  • Change water 2–3x per week or as needed to maintain cleanliness
  • Water temperature should match ambient warm-side temps: 80–85Β°F

Substrate

  • Topsoil/coconut fiber blend ⭐ β€” Holds humidity well and allows natural digging behavior
  • Cypress mulch β€” Excellent humidity retention; naturalistic and easy to maintain
  • Maintain substrate depth of at least 3–4 inches
  • Avoid: sand (impaction risk), paper towels long-term (insufficient humidity retention)

Climbing & Enrichment

  • Large, sturdy branches at multiple heights β€” sailfins are powerful climbers and will use every level
  • Cork bark flats and tubes for hides and basking platforms
  • Live or artificial plants for visual security β€” pothos, hibiscus, and ficus are popular choices
  • A basking platform positioned directly under the UVB/heat source

🌑️ Temperature, Lighting & Humidity

Temperature Gradient

Zone Temperature
Basking Spot 105–115Β°F (surface temp)
Warm Side Ambient 85–90Β°F
Cool Side Ambient 75–80Β°F
Nighttime Low No lower than 70Β°F

UVB Lighting β€” Essential

Sailfin dragons are diurnal baskers from equatorial Indonesia and require high-output UVB to synthesize vitamin D3, absorb calcium, and maintain long-term health. UVB deficiency leads to metabolic bone disease (MBD), a serious and often fatal condition.

  • Zoo Med Powersun UV Mercury Vapor Lamp ⭐ β€” All-in-one UVB + heat basking bulb. Excellent for large enclosures. Provides UVB, UVA, and visible light in one unit. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β€” $74.99.
  • Zoo Med Combo Deep Dome Dual Lamp Fixture β€” Run a T5 HO UVB tube alongside a separate basking bulb for maximum coverage in large enclosures. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β€” $43.99.
  • Maintain a 12–14 hour light cycle to match their equatorial photoperiod
  • Replace UVB bulbs every 6–12 months even if they still emit visible light β€” UVB output degrades before the bulb burns out

Humidity

Parameter Target
Ambient Humidity 70–90%
During Shed 80–90%+

Sailfin dragons are from tropical rainforest environments and require consistently high humidity. Mist the enclosure 2–3x daily, use a fogger or automatic misting system for large enclosures, and ensure the substrate stays moist (not waterlogged). Their large water feature also contributes significantly to ambient humidity.

πŸ₯— Feeding & Nutrition

Sailfin dragons are omnivores with a diet that shifts with age β€” juveniles lean more heavily on insects for protein, while adults eat a higher proportion of plant matter. Variety is key to long-term health.

Insect Feeders β€” Available at Ohio Pet Depot

  • Dubia Roaches ⭐ β€” The ideal staple feeder insect. High protein, low fat, excellent calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, and easy to gut-load. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β€” $4.99.
  • Variety Feeder Pack β€” Great for dietary variety and enrichment. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β€” $11.99.
  • Crickets, hornworms, silkworms, and superworms β€” excellent variety feeders
  • Avoid: wild-caught insects (pesticide/parasite risk); fireflies (toxic)

Plant Matter

  • Leafy greens (staple): Collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, endive
  • Fruits (occasional treat): Mango, papaya, figs, berries, banana
  • Flowers: Hibiscus flowers and leaves are a favorite and highly nutritious
  • Avoid: Spinach, kale (in excess), avocado, citrus, onion, rhubarb

Supplements

  • Zoo Med Repti Calcium ⭐ β€” Dust all feeder insects at every feeding for juveniles; every other feeding for adults. Essential for preventing metabolic bone disease. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β€” $4.99.
  • Multivitamin supplement β€” dust feeders 1–2x per week

Feeding Schedule

Age Insects Plant Matter
Juvenile (under 12 in) Daily β€” 5–10 appropriately sized feeders Offered daily; may be ignored initially
Sub-Adult (12–24 in) Every other day Daily; increasing proportion
Adult (24+ in) 2–3x per week Daily; majority of diet

🀝 Handling & Taming

Ambon Sailfin Dragons are skittish and fast as juveniles β€” they are prey animals by nature and their first instinct is to flee, often toward their water feature. With consistent, patient handling they can become quite calm, but this takes time and a gentle approach.

  • Start slow: Let the animal acclimate to its enclosure for 1–2 weeks before attempting handling
  • Short, frequent sessions: 5–10 minutes daily is better than long infrequent sessions
  • Never grab from above β€” this triggers a predator response; approach from the side and scoop from below
  • Support the full body β€” especially the hindquarters and tail; they are powerful and will thrash if unsupported
  • Watch the tail: Sailfin dragons have a powerful whip-like tail β€” a stressed animal can deliver a painful strike
  • Most animals tame significantly within a few months of consistent interaction; some become very personable

🩺 Health & Wellness

Signs of a Healthy Sailfin Dragon

  • Bright, alert eyes with no discharge
  • Active basking behavior during the day
  • Feeding regularly and enthusiastically
  • Smooth, vibrant skin; complete sheds
  • Strong grip when climbing; no limb weakness
  • Regular use of the water feature
  • Healthy body weight β€” visible hip bones or spine = underweight

Common Health Issues

Issue Signs Cause
Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) Soft jaw, limb deformities, tremors, inability to climb Insufficient UVB; calcium deficiency; improper supplementation
Respiratory Infection Wheezing, mucus, open-mouth breathing, lethargy Temps too low; drafts; humidity too low or inconsistent
Retained Shed Patchy shed; constricted toes or tail tip Insufficient humidity; dehydration; no soaking access
Parasites Weight loss, lethargy, abnormal droppings Wild-caught feeders; stress; imported animals
Stress / Anorexia Hiding constantly, refusing food, dark coloration Enclosure too small; insufficient hides; over-handling; inadequate water access

⚠️ Sailfin dragons require a reptile-experienced exotic vet. Find one before you need one. Annual fecal exams are recommended, especially for wild-caught or recently imported animals.
