🏠 Enclosure & Habitat Setup

Enclosure Size

Life Stage Minimum Enclosure Size
Hatchling / Juvenile (under 24 in) 20-gallon long (30"L x 12"W x 12"H)
Sub-Adult / Adult 40-gallon breeder (36"L x 18"W x 18"H) minimum; 4'x2' enclosure ideal

Mexican Black Kingsnakes are active, exploratory snakes that will use every inch of their enclosure. A secure, escape-proof lid with clips is essential β€” kingsnakes are persistent and powerful escape artists. Never underestimate their ability to push through an unsecured lid.

⚠️ House alone β€” always. Kingsnakes are ophiophagous (snake-eaters) by nature and will readily consume other snakes, including other kingsnakes. Never cohabitate with any other snake species.

Substrate

  • Zoo Med Aspen Snake Bedding (8qt) ⭐ β€” The ideal substrate for Mexican Black Kingsnakes. Holds burrows well, easy to spot-clean, and allows the natural burrowing behavior these snakes love. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β€” $9.99.
  • Cypress mulch β€” excellent alternative, especially for maintaining slightly higher humidity during shed
  • Avoid: Cedar or pine shavings (toxic respiratory irritants); sand (impaction risk); any substrate with sharp edges

Hides

  • Provide two snug-fitting hides β€” one on the warm side, one on the cool side
  • Hides should fit the snake snugly β€” a hide that is too large provides no security
  • A humid hide with damp sphagnum moss is highly recommended, especially during shed

Enrichment

  • Branches and cork bark for climbing and exploring β€” Mexican Black Kingsnakes are active and curious
  • Artificial plants for visual cover and security
  • Maintain aspen depth of at least 2–3 inches β€” they love to burrow

🌑️ Temperature & Lighting

Temperature Gradient

Zone Temperature
Warm Side / Belly Heat 85–90Β°F (surface temp)
Warm Side Ambient 80–85Β°F
Cool Side Ambient 72–78Β°F
Nighttime Low No lower than 65Β°F

Heating Equipment

  • Zoo Med Reptitherm Under Tank Heater ⭐ β€” Excellent primary heat source. Provides the belly heat kingsnakes use for digestion and thermoregulation. Always use with a thermostat. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β€” $23.99–$39.99.
  • Ceramic heat emitter (CHE) on a thermostat β€” good for ambient heat without light disruption
  • Never use hot rocks β€” they cause thermal burns
  • Always use a thermostat on all heat sources β€” unregulated heat mats can overheat and cause burns or fires

Lighting

  • Maintain a consistent 12-hour on/off light cycle
  • Low-level UVB (5.0 or 6%) is not required but is now recommended by many reptile vets for long-term health and natural behavior
  • Mexican Black Kingsnakes are more diurnal than many colubrids and will benefit from a proper day/night cycle

Humidity

Parameter Target
Normal Humidity 40–60%
During Shed 60–70%+ β€” add a humid hide with damp sphagnum moss

πŸ₯— Feeding & Nutrition

Mexican Black Kingsnakes are enthusiastic, reliable feeders β€” one of their best qualities as a pet snake. They rarely refuse meals and are far less prone to feeding strikes than ball pythons. Frozen/thawed mice are the ideal diet.

Prey Size Guide

Snake Size / Weight Prey Item
Juvenile (under 100g) Pinky to fuzzy mouse
Sub-Adult (100–250g) Hopper to adult mouse
Adult (250g+) Adult mouse; large adult mouse for bigger animals

Prey should be approximately the same width as the widest part of the snake's body. Mexican Black Kingsnakes have a strong feeding response β€” always use tongs and never hand-feed.

Feeder Rodents β€” Available at Ohio Pet Depot

  • Frozen Feeder Mice ⭐ β€” The ideal staple. Safe (no bite risk), nutritionally complete, and easy to store. Thaw fully in warm water before offering. Available at Ohio Pet Depot.
  • Live Feeder Mice β€” Available for hatchlings that initially refuse frozen. Transition to frozen/thawed as soon as possible. Available at Ohio Pet Depot.

Feeding Schedule

Age / Size Frequency
Juvenile (under 100g) Every 5–7 days
Sub-Adult (100–250g) Every 7 days
Adult (250g+) Every 10–14 days

Feeding Tips

  • Always use feeding tongs β€” Mexican Black Kingsnakes have a strong, fast feeding response and will strike at movement; never hand-feed
  • No handling 48–72 hours after feeding β€” prevents regurgitation
  • Thaw frozen prey properly: Submerge in a sealed bag in warm water for 20–30 minutes until fully thawed and warm to the touch
  • Feeding in the enclosure is fine β€” unlike ball pythons, kingsnakes rarely develop substrate-ingestion issues during feeding
  • Fasting during shed is normal β€” resume feeding once the shed is complete

🀝 Handling & Taming

Mexican Black Kingsnakes are among the most rewarding colubrids to tame. Juveniles can be defensive and musking is common at first, but with consistent, calm handling they become very docile and curious.

  • Wait 5–7 days after bringing your new snake home before handling β€” allow time to acclimate
  • No handling 48–72 hours after feeding
  • No handling during shed β€” vision is impaired and they are more defensive
  • Start with short sessions: 10–15 minutes, 3–5x per week; increase gradually
  • Expect musking early on β€” this is a defense mechanism, not aggression; it diminishes quickly with regular handling
  • Support the full body β€” let the snake move through your hands; kingsnakes are active and exploratory handlers
  • Most Mexican Black Kingsnakes become very calm and handleable within a few weeks of consistent interaction

🩺 Health & Wellness

Signs of a Healthy Mexican Black Kingsnake

  • Glossy, jet-black scales (slightly dull = pre-shed, normal)
  • Clear, bright eyes (cloudy/blue = in shed, normal)
  • Active and alert, especially during the day
  • Feeding regularly and enthusiastically
  • Healthy body weight β€” rounded, muscular; visible spine = underweight
  • Clean vent with no discharge
  • Regular, complete sheds in one piece

Common Health Issues

Issue Signs Cause
Retained Shed (Dysecdysis) Patchy shed; retained eye caps; skin stuck on tail tip Low humidity; dehydration; no humid hide
Respiratory Infection (RI) Wheezing, clicking, mucus, open-mouth breathing, lethargy Temps too low; drafts; excessive humidity without airflow
Mites Tiny moving dots on skin or in water dish; excessive soaking; rubbing on decor Contaminated substrate, feeders, or equipment
Regurgitation Vomiting prey after feeding Handling too soon; temps too low; prey too large; stress
Escape Injuries Abrasions on snout; scale damage Rubbing against unsecured lid β€” kingsnakes are persistent escape artists

⚠️ Mexican Black Kingsnakes require a reptile-experienced vet. Find one before you need one β€” many general practice vets are not comfortable treating snakes. Annual wellness exams are recommended.
