πΏ Beginner's Guide to Bioactive Terrariums
What They Are and How to Set One Up
By Ohio Pet Depot | August 2026
If you've spent any time in the reptile hobby lately, you've probably heard the term "bioactive." It's one of the most exciting developments in modern reptile keeping β and once you understand the concept, it's hard to go back to traditional setups. This guide is your starting point: a plain-English introduction to what bioactive terrariums are, why keepers love them, and how to build your first one.
π€ What Is a Bioactive Terrarium?
A bioactive terrarium is a living ecosystem inside your enclosure. Instead of spot-cleaning waste and replacing substrate every few months, a bioactive setup uses live plants, beneficial microorganisms, and a cleanup crew of small invertebrates to break down waste naturally β just like the forest floor does in the wild.
The result is an enclosure that:
- Looks stunning and naturalistic
- Maintains itself with far less manual cleaning
- Provides a more enriching, stress-reducing environment for your animal
- Stays more humid and stable over time
Think of it as building a tiny, self-sustaining ecosystem rather than just a cage.
β Is Bioactive Right for Your Animal?
Bioactive setups work best for species that live in humid, tropical, or subtropical environments β think geckos, chameleons, dart frogs, skinks, and many snakes. Arid desert species (like bearded dragons or uromastyx) can be done bioactively too, but require different plant and substrate choices. When in doubt, ask our staff β we're happy to help you figure out if bioactive is a good fit for your specific animal.
π οΈ The 5 Core Components of a Bioactive Setup
1. πͺ¨ The Drainage Layer
The foundation of any bioactive terrarium is a drainage layer at the bottom of the enclosure. This layer holds excess water away from the substrate above, preventing root rot and anaerobic (oxygen-free) conditions that kill beneficial bacteria.
- Zoo Med Hydroballs Expanded Clay Substrate β β The go-to drainage layer material. Lightweight, porous expanded clay balls that hold water below the substrate without becoming waterlogged. Pour 1β2 inches into the bottom of your enclosure before adding anything else. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β $8.99.
Pro tip: Place a piece of fine mesh or weed barrier fabric between your drainage layer and substrate to keep them from mixing over time.
2. π± The Substrate (Living Soil)
Above the drainage layer goes your bioactive substrate β the living soil where plants root, beneficial bacteria thrive, and your cleanup crew lives. A good bioactive mix is loose, airy, and moisture-retentive.
A simple beginner mix that works for most tropical species:
- 60% organic topsoil (no fertilizers, pesticides, or perlite) β the base
- 30% coconut fiber β for moisture retention and texture
- 10% coarse sand or orchid bark β for drainage and aeration
For the coconut fiber component:
- Zoo Med Eco Earth Loose Coconut Fiber (8qt) β β Ready to use straight from the bag; easy to mix into your substrate blend. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β $9.99.
- Zoo Med Eco Earth Compressed Coconut Fiber β Expand with water for a larger volume; great value for bigger enclosures. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β $5.99.
Aim for at least 3β4 inches of substrate depth β your cleanup crew needs room to work, and plant roots need space to establish.
3. πΊ Live Plants
Live plants are what make a bioactive enclosure truly come alive. They absorb waste byproducts (nitrates), produce oxygen, maintain humidity, and give your animal enrichment, cover, and a more natural environment.
Great beginner plants for tropical bioactive setups:
- Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) β β Nearly indestructible, grows fast, tolerates low light, and is safe for most reptiles. The #1 beginner bioactive plant.
- Bromeliads β Stunning, hold water in their cups (great for tree frogs and chameleons), and thrive in humid enclosures
- Ferns (Boston, bird's nest, button) β Love humidity and low-to-medium light; fill in beautifully
- Peperomia β Compact, slow-growing, and very tolerant; great for smaller enclosures
- Wandering Jew / Tradescantia β Fast-growing ground cover; safe and easy
Stop in at Ohio Pet Depot β we often carry a rotating selection of terrarium-safe plants. Ask our staff what's currently in stock!
4. π The Cleanup Crew (CUC)
This is the magic ingredient that makes bioactive work. Your cleanup crew is a colony of small invertebrates β primarily isopods and springtails β that live in the substrate and break down waste, shed skin, uneaten food, and decaying plant matter. They are the engine of your living ecosystem.
Isopods (Pill Bugs / Roly Polies) β The heavy lifters of the cleanup crew. They shred and consume waste, aerate the substrate, and reproduce to maintain their own population. We carry several species at Ohio Pet Depot:
- Dairy Cow Isopods β A popular, hardy beginner species. Great all-around cleanup crew for tropical setups. Available at Ohio Pet Depot.
- Gestroii Isopods β Excellent tropical species; active and prolific breeders. Available at Ohio Pet Depot.
- Orange Vigor Isopods β Striking orange coloration; great for display enclosures. Available at Ohio Pet Depot.
- Spanish Pineapple Isopods β A premium display species with beautiful patterning. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β $24.99.
Springtails β Microscopic decomposers that work alongside isopods to break down mold, fungus, and fine organic matter. They are especially important for preventing mold blooms in humid enclosures. Ask our staff about springtail availability in-store.
How many do you need? For a 20-gallon enclosure, start with 20β30 isopods and a culture of springtails. They will reproduce and self-regulate to match the waste load in your enclosure.
5. πͺ΅ Hides, Hardscape & Structure
Your bioactive enclosure needs physical structure β places for your animal to hide, climb, and feel secure, and surfaces for plants to anchor to.
- Zoo Med Natural Cork Rounds β Hollow cork tubes make excellent hides and climbing structures. Naturalistic, durable, and isopod-friendly. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β $10.99.
- Zoo Med Natural Cork Flats β Flat cork bark for background panels, ground hides, and plant mounting. Available at Ohio Pet Depot β $10.99.
- Driftwood, rocks, and branches β add visual depth and climbing opportunities; bake or boil before adding to kill parasites
π Quick-Start Checklist
Here's the basic build order for your first bioactive terrarium:
- β Choose your enclosure β glass terrariums with front-opening doors work best for access and humidity retention
- β Add drainage layer β 1β2 inches of Hydroballs at the bottom
- β Add mesh separator β fine mesh or weed barrier between drainage and substrate
- β Mix and add substrate β 3β4 inches of your bioactive soil mix (topsoil + Eco Earth + sand/bark)
- β Plant your plants β plant before adding animals; give plants 2β4 weeks to establish roots
- β Add hardscape β cork rounds, cork flats, branches, and rocks
- β Introduce your cleanup crew β add isopods and springtails before or at the same time as your animal
- β Set up lighting and heating β live plants need light; use a full-spectrum grow light or UVB bulb on a timer
- β Add your animal β once plants are established and the CUC is active, your enclosure is ready!
π‘ A Few Things to Keep in Mind
- Bioactive takes time to establish β the first 4β8 weeks are the "break-in" period while bacteria, plants, and the CUC find their balance. Some mold or fungus early on is normal β your springtails will handle it.
- You'll still do some maintenance β bioactive dramatically reduces cleaning, but you'll still need to top off water, prune plants, and occasionally spot-clean large waste deposits
- Not all animals are compatible β large, heavy-bodied animals or very dry-environment species may not be ideal candidates; ask us before you build
- Start simple β pothos + isopods + springtails is all you need to get started. You can always add complexity over time.
