Brook's Kingsnake Hatchling Care Sheet
Enclosure Setup
Hatchlings require a 20-gallon long breeder tank or similar enclosure. Provide aspen shavings, cypress mulch, or paper-based bedding for burrowing. Include a hide box on both the warm and cool sides to reduce stress. Maintain temperatures between 75–85°F with a basking spot around 85°F. Use an under-tank heater or heat tape with a thermostat to prevent burns.
Feeding
Feed pinky mice or appropriately-sized prey every 5–7 days. Frozen-thawed prey is safer than live to prevent injuries. Hatchlings may be food-motivated; handle gently after feeding to avoid regurgitation. Some individuals may refuse food initially—patience and consistent feeding schedules help.
Humidity and Lighting
Brook's kingsnakes prefer moderate humidity (40–60%). Provide a water bowl large enough for soaking. UVB lighting is beneficial but not strictly required if diet includes whole prey. A 12-hour light/dark cycle supports natural behavior.
Handling and Temperament
Hatchlings are delicate and may be defensive or nervous. Minimize handling during the first week. Once acclimated, gentle, brief handling 2–3 times weekly helps tame them. Wear gloves if the snake strikes frequently.
Health Monitoring
Watch for signs of mites, respiratory issues, or feeding problems. Ensure regular shedding and healthy weight gain. Consult a reptile veterinarian if behavior changes or health concerns arise.
Lifespan
With proper care, Brook's kingsnakes live 15–20 years in captivity.
