Product information
Columbian Shark freshwater fish (Ariopsis seemanni) is a distinctive catfish known for its silvery body, dark fin edges, tall dorsal fin, and shark-like profile. Despite its common name, this species is not a true shark and is not a permanent freshwater fish. Young specimens can tolerate freshwater for a period, but the species naturally inhabits estuaries and coastal waters and requires a transition to brackish and eventually more saline conditions as it matures.

Distinctive Appearance
The Columbian has a streamlined, silvery body, a forked tail, and prominent dorsal and pectoral fins. Its dark fin markings give it a striking appearance in an aquarium. The pointed head and tall dorsal fin contribute to its resemblance to a small shark, although it belongs to the catfish family.
Natural Habitat and Behaviour
This species occurs along the Pacific coast of Central and South America, including estuaries, coastal lagoons, and river mouths. It is an active swimmer and generally does best with compatible companions of a similar size. As it grows, it may prey on smaller fish and shrimp that fit inside its mouth.
Aquarium Environment
Columbian Sharks require a spacious aquarium with strong filtration, good oxygenation, stable water conditions, and plenty of open swimming space. Juveniles may be kept in freshwater temporarily, but long-term housing must account for their changing salinity needs. Salinity should be adjusted gradually using a reliable aquarium salinity meter, with the target based on the fish's life stage and expert guidance.
Feeding and Nutrition
As omnivorous catfish, Columbian can eat suitable sinking pellets, shrimp-based foods, and appropriate frozen foods. Offer a varied diet and remove uneaten food to help maintain water quality. Avoid keeping them with very small fish that may become prey.
