Blue Collared Lizards are from rocky, open desert and semi-arid scrubland. Their enclosure must replicate this environment — hot, dry, with intense UVB, plenty of basking rocks, and room to sprint.

Enclosure Size

Blue Collared Lizards are among the most active lizards in the hobby — they sprint, jump, and climb constantly. A larger enclosure is always better. Front-opening enclosures are strongly preferred — top-down access stresses these lizards significantly.

The basking spot temperature is not a typo — Blue Collared Lizards in the wild bask on rocks that reach 120°F+ in summer. UVB Lighting — High Output Required

Blue Collared Lizards are from open, exposed rocky terrain with no canopy cover — they receive some of the highest UV exposure of any lizard species. They require high-output UVB, not the low-level UVB sufficient for forest species.

⚠️ No UVB = Metabolic Bone Disease. Blue Collared Lizards have extremely high UVB demands. Low-output or inadequate UVB leads to MBD rapidly. Use high-output 10.0 UVB — do not substitute with lower-rated bulbs.

Humidity

Blue Collared Lizards are from arid environments and prefer low humidity. Good ventilation is essential. A screen top or well-ventilated enclosure prevents moisture buildup.

Prey Size Rule

• Lightly mist one side of the enclosure in the morning 2–3x per week — many Blue Collared Lizards will drink water droplets from rocks and glass

🤝 Handling & Taming

Blue Collared Lizards are fast, alert, and initially defensive — but with consistent, patient handling they can become quite tame. They will never be as docile as a bearded dragon, but a well-socialized Blue Collared Lizard is a confident, interactive animal that is a joy to work with.

• Wait 1–2 weeks after bringing your lizard home before handling — let it acclimate and establish a feeding routine first
• Approach from the side, never from above — overhead approach triggers a predator response
• Be quick and confident — hesitant, slow movements allow the lizard to escape; a firm, smooth scoop is less stressful than a prolonged chase
• Support the full body — never restrain by the tail; tail autotomy (dropping the tail) is possible under extreme stress
• Short, frequent sessions — 5–10 minutes daily is more effective than infrequent long sessions
• No handling during shed — skin is sensitive and they are more defensive
• No handling within 1 hour of feeding
• Males are more territorial and may be more defensive than females, especially during breeding season (spring)

⚠️ Never house two males together — Blue Collared Lizard males are highly territorial and will fight, causing serious injury or death. A male-female pair or single animal is the appropriate housing arrangement.
