Halloween Moon Crab Care Guide

The Halloween Moon Crab (Gecarcinus quadratus) is one of the most visually striking land crabs in the hobby. Named for their vivid Halloween coloration — jet black body, bright orange legs, and purple claws — these crabs are native to the Pacific coast of Central America, where they live in tropical forests near the ocean. They are primarily terrestrial but require access to both fresh and saltwater for hydration, molting, and overall health.

Halloween Moon Crabs are fascinating display animals with bold personalities and impressive coloration. They require more specialized care than many invertebrates — particularly their water and humidity needs — but are very rewarding for keepers willing to meet those requirements.

At Ohio Pet Depot, we carry Halloween Moon Crabs and the supplies you need to set them up properly. This guide covers everything you need to keep them healthy and thriving.

Enclosure Setup

Size

A single adult Halloween Moon Crab needs a minimum of a 20-gallon long enclosure. These crabs are active and need floor space to roam, burrow, and access their water dishes. A 40-gallon breeder is ideal for one or two crabs. Taller enclosures are not necessary — floor space is the priority. A secure, escape-proof lid is essential; these crabs are strong climbers.

Substrate

Substrate is one of the most critical elements of Halloween Moon Crab care. They are dedicated burrowers and must be able to fully bury themselves, especially during molting:

  • Zoo Med Eco Earth Loose Coconut Fiber — excellent moisture retention, soft for burrowing, naturalistic
  • A sand + coconut fiber mix (60/40 or 70/30) is ideal — the sand provides structural stability for burrows while the coconut fiber retains moisture
  • Play sand alone can work but dries out quickly and may not hold burrow shape as well

Provide a minimum of 6–8 inches of substrate depth — deep enough for the crab to fully disappear. During molting, crabs may burrow for weeks to months and must not be disturbed. Insufficient substrate depth is one of the most common causes of molting death.

Water Dishes — Critical

Halloween Moon Crabs require access to both fresh water AND saltwater at all times. This is non-negotiable for their long-term health:

  • Fresh water dish: Dechlorinated or filtered water; deep enough for the crab to submerge its gills but shallow enough to climb out easily. A ramp or rocks to aid exit are recommended
  • Saltwater dish: Use marine-grade aquarium salt (not table salt, not freshwater aquarium salt) mixed to a specific gravity of 1.021–1.026 — the same salinity as natural seawater. Change both dishes 2–3 times per week

The saltwater dish is used for gill hydration, osmoregulation, and is essential for successful molting. Crabs kept without saltwater access will decline and die over time.

Hides & Decor

Provide cork bark, half-logs, and flat rocks for surface hides. These crabs will spend most of their time buried or hiding. Keep decor minimal enough to allow easy spot-cleaning. Avoid sharp decor that could injure a freshly molted crab.

Temperature & Lighting

Temperature

Zone Temperature
Ambient (daytime) 75–85°F
Warm side 80–88°F
Cool side 72–78°F
Nighttime low 68–75°F

Halloween Moon Crabs are tropical animals and do best in the upper 70s to low 80s. Most homes maintain adequate temperatures without supplemental heating. If additional heat is needed, a low-wattage Fluker's Ceramic Heat Emitter on a thermostat is the safest option. Never use an under-tank heater — crabs burrow and can be burned by unregulated bottom heat.

Lighting

No special UVB lighting is required. A standard 12-hour light / 12-hour dark cycle is sufficient. These crabs are nocturnal and most active after lights out.

Humidity

Target 75–85% humidity. Halloween Moon Crabs breathe through modified gills and require high ambient humidity to keep their gill chambers moist. Low humidity causes respiratory distress and death over time.

  • Mist the enclosure once or twice daily, focusing on the substrate and walls
  • The substrate should remain consistently damp — not soaking wet, but never dry
  • Partial coverage of the screen lid with glass or plastic helps retain humidity
  • A digital hygrometer is strongly recommended

Diet & Feeding

Halloween Moon Crabs are omnivorous scavengers in the wild, eating fallen fruit, leaf litter, fungi, carrion, and plant matter. In captivity they accept a wide variety of foods and benefit from dietary variety.

Staple Foods

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables: Mango, papaya, banana, apple, sweet potato, squash, leafy greens (collard greens, dandelion greens, kale) — the foundation of the diet
  • Dried or fresh coconut — highly accepted and naturalistic
  • Dried mushrooms — nutritious and accepted
  • Leaf litter (dried oak or magnolia leaves) — naturalistic enrichment and food source

Protein Sources (Several Times Per Week)

  • Banded Crickets — excellent live protein; stimulates natural foraging behavior
  • Dubia Roaches — nutritionally superior protein source; highly accepted
  • Dried shrimp or krill — excellent calcium and protein source; highly accepted by crabs
  • Small pieces of cooked, unseasoned fish or shrimp — offer occasionally; remove within 24 hours
  • Cooked egg — good protein variety; offer occasionally

Calcium Sources (Essential)

Calcium is critical for exoskeleton development, especially after molting. Provide calcium sources at all times:

  • Cuttlebone — place directly in the enclosure; crabs will gnaw on it as needed
  • Crushed oyster shell or eggshell — sprinkle on food or leave in a small dish
  • Dried shrimp and krill also provide calcium

Feeding Schedule

Offer fresh food every 1–2 days. Remove uneaten fresh food within 24–48 hours to prevent mold and bacterial growth. Dry foods (cuttlebone, dried shrimp, leaf litter) can be left in the enclosure at all times. Crabs may eat less or stop eating entirely before and during a molt — this is normal.

Molting — The Most Critical Period

Molting is the most dangerous and important event in a Halloween Moon Crab's life. They shed their entire exoskeleton to grow, and during this period they are completely soft and vulnerable.

Signs of Pre-Molt

  • Reduced appetite or complete refusal to eat for days to weeks
  • Increased burrowing and hiding
  • Dull, chalky appearance to the shell
  • Lethargy and reduced activity

During Molt

  • Do not disturb the crab — a crab that is interrupted during molting can die. If the crab has burrowed, leave it completely alone
  • Do not remove the old exoskeleton — the crab will eat it to reclaim calcium and minerals
  • Ensure substrate remains moist and saltwater is accessible
  • A crab may remain buried for 4–8 weeks during a molt — this is normal. Do not dig it up to check on it

Post-Molt

  • The crab will be extremely soft for 1–2 weeks after emerging — do not handle
  • Ensure calcium sources are available — the crab will eat voraciously to harden its new shell
  • Provide easy access to both water dishes
  • Resume normal feeding once the crab is active and eating

Molting failures are the most common cause of death in captive Halloween Moon Crabs and are almost always caused by: insufficient substrate depth, low humidity, lack of saltwater access, or disturbance during the molt. Get these four things right and your crab will molt successfully.

Handling

Halloween Moon Crabs can be handled but require care:

  • They have strong claws that can pinch hard — approach from behind and support the body from below
  • Never grab by the legs or claws — legs can be dropped (autotomy) as a defense mechanism
  • Never handle during or after molting — the soft exoskeleton is easily damaged
  • Keep handling sessions brief — these are display animals, not pets that enjoy interaction
  • Wash hands before and after handling — soaps, lotions, and chemicals on your hands can harm the crab through skin absorption

Health & Common Issues

Issue Signs Cause / Action
Molting failure Crab found dead partially out of old shell, or stuck in molt Insufficient substrate depth, low humidity, or no saltwater; correct all three before next molt
Dehydration / gill drying Lethargy, labored movement, dry appearance Low humidity or no water access; mist immediately, check water dishes
Leg loss Missing leg(s) Stress, rough handling, or fighting; legs will regrow at next molt if the crab survives
Aggression / cannibalism Missing limbs, dead crabmate Insufficient space or resources when housed together; separate immediately
Refusal to eat Ignoring food for days to weeks Usually pre-molt; also check temps and humidity; do not force-feed
Bacterial infection Discoloration, lesions, foul odor Dirty water or substrate; full clean, fresh water; exotic vet if severe

Group housing note: Halloween Moon Crabs can be housed together but require ample space, multiple water dishes, and multiple food stations to reduce competition. Molting crabs must be separated or given a private burrowing area — tankmates will attack and eat a molting crab. When in doubt, house singly.
